
Wicker Park Lutheran Church (WPLC) was founded in 1879. It has undergone a series of renovations over the years and stands today as an impressive structure on the corner of Hoyne Avenue and LeMoyne Street. You can appreciate the building’s architecture while attending an intimate Candlelight concert. WPLC is hosting a series of these performances featuring classical takes on some of the greatest music of all time.
You’ll find getting to the striking church to be an easy task. WPLC is located just two blocks south of the no.72 North Avenue bus, two blocks west of the no.50 Damen Avenue bus, and three blocks from the no.56 Milwaukee Avenue bus. If arriving by car, you can also find non-zoned, free parking on Hoyne and LeMoyne.

2. Burglaries and deterioration
While it has survived plenty of trials and tribulations, WPLC continues to stand tall. After being burglarized five times in 1973, three stained glass windows being stolen in 1976, and a failure to be reimbursed by the insurance company, WPLC began to deteriorate. Fortunately, the 21st century brought an extensive renovation project overseen by Rev. Ruth VanDemark.
3. Romanesque architecture
Designed by A.C. Hansen, there are plenty of stunning details to behold at WPLC. The oblong church was built in the classical Romanesque style and features a vaulted ceiling and round arches. Two towers based on those of Abbey of Sainte-Trinité (the Holy Trinity) stand out as part of the breathtaking building.
