What is “We call it Ballet”?
From one of the world’s most-treasured ballets comes an entrancing spectacle that combines the timelessness of the classical with the innovation of technology. At “We call it Ballet” in Chicago, the tale of princess Aurora is reimagined with luminous LED-lit ballet costumes that glow in the dark. With every plié and pirouette illuminated by their glimmering ensemble, ballerinas quite literally light up the stage while interpreting Sleeping Beauty’s most cherished compositions.
Ballet, its storytelling and the show
Ballet is an internationally-recognized art form that’s been enchanting audiences for over half a millennium. Expressive gestures and intricate movements performed to striking, classical compositions is already an enchanting medium for storytelling. Add luminous leotards, ballet slippers and tutus to the mix, and you’ve got an enhanced ballet experience that pushes the creative boundaries of dance.
The show is an abridged version of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece so over the course of 60 minutes, colors of the LED lights on the costumes change according to the mood of each scene. Neon blues, fluorescent yellows, radiant reds and more vibrant colors shine brightly, revealing the inner emotions of the characters on stage. And along with the gracious ballerinas, a narrator will guide spectators through this legendary tale of fantastical kingdoms, hidden castles, hopeless romantics and the cursed spindle of a spinning wheel.
‘We call it Ballet’ is enchanting audiences in Chicago with unforgettable evenings of dance and splendor. Only this time, Spanish dances amid a sea of roses are being swapped out for enchanting ballet performances illuminated by LED-adorned costumes.
This season, this innovative spin on the ever-lasting Sleeping Beauty ballet will be putting a spell on Arts Center of Oak Park. Shows take place over the course of approximately 60 minutes and doors open 30 minutes before show time. Seats are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis depending on each section, so we recommend getting to the venue as early as possible.
