Background on The Den
The building was initially constructed in 1898 by M Krause to be used as a department store, using plans by architects Frommann & Jebsen, who’ve also designed Humboldt Park Receptory Building and Stable. Shortly after, the space was converted into a movie theatre but that didn’t stick either.
By 1950, The Den Building had a dime store on the first floor, with the second floor serving as storage space while the third level was used as a billiards hall. But the story doesn’t end there because in 2010 Ryan Martin purchases the space and opens The Den Theatre on level two of the building. Countless artists have graced its stages, including Kevin Nealon, Alex Borstein and John Mulaney, and it continues to feature both major headliners and new voices in the arts.
