It’s about to be a long weekend of wintry weather in Chicago—an Extreme Cold Warning is set to take effect Friday, and multiple chances for snow will follow close behind!
Here’s a breakdown of the forecast and some tips for staying safe over the coming days.
Snow Saturday and Sunday

Predictions from the National Weather Service indicate that Chicago could see an extended period of snowfall from late Saturday into Sunday.
A 30% chance of snow is possible Saturday during the day, with increasing precipitation come nighttime.
The chance for snow will hover around 60% come Sunday, with showers to continue intermittently throughout the day.
As for how much snow we’ll get, accumulation totals of up to 3 inches are possible, according to the Weather Channel.

Snow safety tips

With sub zero temps and snow on the way, let’s do a quick refresh of some winter weather safety tips courtesy of the Chicago Department of Public Health:
- Stay indoors in a heated room as much as possible.
- Hang blankets over windows at night, but let the sun shine in during the day.
- Cover cracks around doors with rugs, towels, etc.
- Ensure proper ventilation for all alternative heat sources (fire places, wood stoves, etc.) to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Never use a gas stove as a heat source.
- Refuel kerosene heaters outside and keep them at least three feet away from flammable objects.
- If you have no heat, close off unneeded rooms by placing towels/rags/etc. under the doors.
