Chicago’s temperatures are quite fickle. We know this, yet, with news of Chicago’s high temperatures this last week, (between 78-83 degrees!) it felt natural to settle into a warm summer mindset. Now, the temperatures are dipping drastically with a rumored low of 27 degrees and a high of 40 expected to hit the Windy City today.
This all comes after Chicago broke a 136-year-old record for warm temperatures on Thursday (4/13) with a high of 83 degrees, thereby breaking a record from April 13 1887 when temps soared to 82 degrees.
A mix of high winds and snow is already starting to impact the area well into the early morning. Plus, the cold temperatures and unexpected snow could cause low visibility on the roads, with officials warning to be extra cautious.
Luckily, the snowfall is expected to stop around early afternoon, though colder temperatures are sure to persist with 45 MPH winds sweeping across western counties. It’s about 20 degrees below normal for this time of year, with normal spring weather staying around 60 degrees.
It looks like it’s time to break out our winter coats again, but hopefully, the spring temperatures stay nice going forward! With Chicago’s mercurial nature, who’s to say?
Tuesday’s weather is expected to stay sunny with the rest of the week’s forecast showing storms persisting until Friday.
Last week’s warm streak lasted through the weekend, with plenty of exciting activities happening in and around the city, from the first spring bridge lift to the annual farmer’s markets, and more. (Sadly the cherry blossoms have yet to bloom but we’ll keep you updated once they do!)
This past weekend, Saturday stayed sunny at 76 degrees, with Sunday’s temps falling to 64, with thunderstorms and 30 MPH winds. Now, with Monday’s weather going to an even cooler 40 degrees with a side helping of rain and possible snow, we’re breaking out our snow boots once again.
