Chicagoans were heartbroken when beloved ice cream spot The Freeze closed in 2023 after 73 years in Logan Square—but a favorite local chain is reimagining the space and carrying on its legacy.
Small Cheval has officially opened at 2815 W Armitage Ave, taking over the former home of The Freeze and repurposing parts of the original facade.
The Freeze’s sign is here to stay

The popular fast-casual burger offshoot of Au Cheval has maintained The Freeze’s iconic sign and a portion of the original exterior, while adding an outdoor patio.
Food-wise, guests can expect Small Cheval’s signature selection of burgers, fries, fried chicken, along with cocktails and beers.
The restaurant is also carrying on The Freeze’s ice cream legacy with dipped cones, shakes, and “concretes” in a variety of flavors.
Small Cheval Logan Square is now open daily from 3pm – 10pm.
