The Shedd Aquarium is getting a major facelift—thanks to a $10 million grant from Abbott Healthcare’s philanthropic foundation.
Announced Thursday, the donation will support Shedd’s ongoing centennial revitalization and conservation efforts while reinforcing the long-standing partnership between the two organizations.
Shedd’s Abbott Oceanarium, named in 2010 in recognition of Abbott’s support, will directly benefit from the funding.
Home to some of the aquarium’s most popular exhibits—including aquatic presentations, animal encounters, and the Phelps 4-D Theater—the pavilion will receive crucial upkeep in the years ahead.

“Situated 800 miles from the nearest ocean, Shedd Aquarium serves as a portal to life beneath the water’s surface, bridging a widening gap between people and nature,” said Dr. Bridget C. Coughlin, Shedd Aquarium’s president and CEO.
“Abbott’s remarkable generosity and corporate leadership will help the aquarium reach, inspire, and empower future generations to better understand and cherish our shared blue planet.”
The Shedd has unveiled exciting new programming in recent months, most notably the revamped “Wonder of Water“ exhibit at the end of 2024. Additionally, the aquarium welcomed two baby rockhopper penguins earlier this month!
