The Vatican elected Cardinal Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV on Thursday, making him the first U.S. and Chicago-born leader of the Catholic Church.
Following the news, Chicagoans took to social media to voice their excitement and ask one important question: is Prevost a Cubs or a Sox fan?
While Prevost himself has not commented, early reports seemed to indicate the new pope is a Cubs fan.
According to CBS Sports reporter Matt Eurich via Twitter/X, an ABC reporter stated “[Prevost] is the first Cardinal who’s a Cubs fan” during the channel’s coverage.
But it appears this may have been pure speculation or a lighthearted aside.
With Prevost having grown up in south suburban Dolton, more recent reports have emerged suggesting he might actually have allegiances to the Sox.
The pope’s brother confirmed to ABC7 this afternoon that he is in fact a Sox fan.
However, his brother added that other members of the pope’s family, particularly on their mother’s side, root for the Cubs.
So there you have it: whether you’re North Side or South Side, the new pope is on your team one way or another.
