The winter chill seems to be over (fingers crossed), with temperatures reaching 70 degrees this week.
During this time, we can always count on the colorful burst of tulips, particularly at flower farms near Chicago, such as the Richardson Farm Tulip Fest.
This year at Richardsons, there will be over 1 million blooms in more than 75 varieties on display.
Over 1 million tulips will bloom in this massive ‘butterfly’ field
The festival will feature an array of tulips, including ruby-red Apeldoorns, pale yellow and pink Elegant Ladies, dark purple Queens of the Night, and white and purple Di Daisies—and about 100,000 daffodils will be in bloom.
The latest additions are planted in a flowing butterfly shape across 10 acres along the lakeside.
When the festival opens, hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, for the duration of the typically two- to three-week event.

Weekend activities will include live music and food trucks, and visitors can expect free parking, dog-friendly grounds, mimosas, a wine bar, fresh donuts, and seasonal gifts available at the gift barn.
At the lakefront, friends can enjoy outdoor games like Giant Jenga, Connect 4, or bags, or relax and take in the view.
Among the food trucks expected to be present on weekends are MJ’s Coffee Bar, Fork ’n’ Fry Poutinerie, and Pixie Dawgs. A craft beer tent by 9th Hour Brewing will also be available, offering donuts, kettle corn, sandwiches, smoothies, soft drinks, beer, and wine.
Admission to the festival is $20 per person for ages 13 and up, $17 for those aged 4 to 12, and free for children 3 and under. Each ticket includes one free tulip, with additional tulips available for purchase at $2 each.
When does Richardson Farm Tulip Fest open?
As always, the exact opening date of this sixth annual fest depends on Mother Nature.
Following the farm on social media is a great way to stay updated as the bloom date approaches.
Please note that tulips are toxic to dogs, so ensure they avoid them if you visit Richardson’s.
