“GYATT”, “BICHIN”, and “HOKTUAH” are just several of the hundreds of vanity license plates rejected in Illinois in 2024.
The Illinois Secretary of State’s office released its annual report on rejected vanity license plates late last week, providing a hilarious glimpse of just how far drivers are willing to go to garner laughs on the road.
While Illinois allows drivers to personalize license plates upon request, the state rejects a large number every year for profanity or readability concerns.
Out of the 60,537 requests for vanity and personalized license plates submitted in 2024, a total of 335 were denied for their offensive or illegible nature, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

“Illinoisans consistently display a great deal of creativity when choosing their customized license plates, but the plates that hit the road must meet the standards of good taste and decency,” said Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias in a statement.
“Our team are well-versed in lecherous language and sneaky swearing, all of which are rejected and placed on our permanent prohibited list.”
