The future is here. So, obviously, the newest public bathroom in Chicago is also self-cleaning.
The public restroom—which costs a whopping $400,000 in plumbing—is in the Polish Triangle at Ashland, Milwaukee, and Division, right by the Blue Line.
This isn’t just any random toilet. The self-sanitizing pod has a power-washing system that cleans and disinfects the toilet and floor for a few minutes after each use.
And Chicago may already be behind the trend, because self-cleaning bathrooms have already been installed in U.S. cities such as San Francisco and European cities such as Paris. In fact, NBC Chicago reported the toilet in West Town is a decommissioned unit from the French company JCDecaux.
Chicago’s newest public bathroom in West Town is closer to opening
According to CBS News, people who pass the West Town triangle every day say plumbing construction started a few months ago. However, in the past few days, “the structure for the bathroom went up.”
Ald. Daniel La Spata (1st Ward) mentioned last spring that the self-cleaning bathroom was expected to be completed by the end of 2026, although an official date has not yet been announced. However, the project appears to be moving closer to a full opening.
