The documentary follows Michelle Obama’s experiences during her sold-out book tour in 2018.
Lawyer, activist, film producer, author, reader, and former First Lady, Michelle Obama is releasing her documentary entitled Becoming on Netflix on May 6.
“I’m excited to let you know that on May 6, @Netflix will release BECOMING, a documentary film directed by Nadia Hallgren that looks at my life and the experiences I had while touring following the release of my memoir,” Obama wrote on Instagram.
In November 2018, Obama released her memoir of the same name. It was 2018’s best-selling book — selling 3.4 million copies in that year alone. Today, it has sold over 11 million. Her documentary will cover her subsequent book tour, which was largely held in sold-out arenas, beginning with the United Center in Chicago.
The #IAmBecoming tour was originally scheduled for 12 venues in 10 cities. However, due to growing popularity and demand, was extended to included an additional 21 cities. Of those cities, 11 were in the US, 4 in Canada, and 6 in Europe.
“Those months I spent traveling—meeting and connecting with people in cities across the globe—drove home the idea that what we share in common is deep and real and can’t be messed with. In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries, and dreams. We processed the past and imagined a better future. In talking about the idea of ‘becoming,’ many of us dared to say our hopes out loud,” she wrote.
The documentary was directed by Nadia Hallgren, a director and cinematographer of 35 shorts, series, and documentary films. It will be released under the banner of Higher Ground Productions, the production company created by the Obamas in 2018.
If this documentary isn’t enough, the Obamas have signed a multi-year deal with Netflix. So just know that more wholesome content is on the way!
“Empathy is our lifeline here. Let’s use it to redirect our attention toward what matters most, and find ways to better remake the world in the image of our hopes. Even in hard times, our stories help cement our values and strengthen our connections. Sharing them shows us the way forward,” Obama wrote.
