The luchadores, or masked wrestlers, will battle it out for the ‘champion of Logan Square at a Mexican-style wrestling event on Saturday, September 3rd.
The free event, hosted by Unity Park Advisory Council, is back for its seventh year. This year, Lucha Libre in the Park will take place at Unity Park on Kimball Ave. Lucha Libre, also known as free fighting, is a type of professional wrestling with origins in Mexico. Lucha Libre wrestlers are known to wear colorful masks and often utilize rapid sequences of holds and maneuvers, along with dramatic acrobatic moves.
The annual event brings together masked wrestlers performing acrobatic feats. Each wrestler is either a ‘técnico’, the good guy, or a ‘rudo’, the bad guy. It’s a match and a performance in one, drawing crowds in the hundreds.
Amidst cheering fans, the wrestlers will perform flips, stunts, and more for the chance to be crowned ‘Champion of Logan Square!’ Starting at 12 PM and going until 1:30, the event is sponsored by Revolution Brewing, Reno, and the Chicago Park District.
With fights following storylines of good vs evil, there will be six matches in total including the rumble for Logan Square’s Heavyweight Champ. Free for all spectators, the outdoor event features wrestlers like Paloma Star, Beau Anderson, Don Caprix, and more familiar faces.
