First-time visitors should be sure to check out Lake Defiance, located near the park’s center. The stunning, 48-acre lake is one of the few glacial lakes in Illinois that has remained largely undeveloped, maintaining a near-natural condition.
While the park provides numerous activities, hiking remains the most popular. There are more than 10 miles of trails in Moraine Hills, including the 3.2-mile Leatherleaf Bog Trail and the 1.7-mile Fox River Road Trail.
Besides providing a cozy setting to take in the scenery, the state park is a habitat for numerous wildlife, making it the perfect place for a little alfresco viewing. For birdwatchers, be on the lookout for more than 200 bird species at the park.
How to get to Moraine Hills State Park from Chicago
From Chicago, you can take I-55 South to Route 80 West and exit at Marseilles.
After exiting, head south on LaSalle County Highway 15 through the town of Marseilles. Cross the Illinois River Bridge, and the park will be the first left.
