Multiple wildfires have wreaked devastation across Los Angeles over the past week, burning through more than 27,000 acres of land and leading to the displacement of thousands.
Here’s a breakdown of the most important information about the LA wildfires fires and ways Chicagoans can make a difference.
How many fires are burning in LA?
Four major wildfires are currently burning in the LA metro region, the largest being the Palisades fire to the west, along with the Eaton fire to the east, and the Kenneth and Hurst fires to the north.
As of noon Friday, the Palisades fire has burned almost 20,000 acres, an area nearly half the size of Washington D.C.
The Eaton Fire has burned nearly 15,000 acres, while the smaller Hurst and Kenneth fires have burned a collective 1,700 acres.
All four fires are at low levels of containment, with the Palisades fire at 6% containment as of noon Friday and the Eaton fire at only 3%.
The Hurst fire is the most contained at 37%, while the Kenneth Fire is at 0% containment, according to California Fire.
What caused the fires?
The wildfire outbreak is the result of a combination of dry conditions and extremely powerful winds which have impacted LA in recent weeks.
Under such conditions, something as simple as having a backyard bon fire or flicking a cigarette can spark a devastating blaze.
LA has also been grappling with a lack of adequate water supply, leading the fires to grow out of control.
How can Chicagoans help?
With the wildfires still presenting a threat to millions, its more important than ever to garner aid for those in need. Luckily for Chicagoans there are several easy ways to do just that.
