One of Chicago’s most beloved civil servants is retiring after more than three decades of service, and the Lincoln Park community is sending her off with a farewell celebration—open to all of Chicago!
Janet Martin, affectionately known as the “Mayor of the Armitage Brown Line,” has spent 32 years as a representative of the Chicago Transit Authority.
She spent 25 of those years at the Armitage station, brightening commuters’ days with her warm greetings and heartfelt conversations.
Martin added a personal touch to the CTA experience, welcoming riders with a cheerful “Hey honey, how you doing?” and always lending a helping hand.

According to the Sheffield Neighborhood Association, those who stopped to chat with her were always met with kindness and care.
“We are so fortunate to have had the gift of Janet for a quarter century,” the association shared in a statement.
Now, as she prepares for retirement, the Lincoln Park community is coming together to celebrate her legacy with a public block party on Friday, February 28, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. at the Armitage Brown Line plaza.
All Chicagoans are welcome to attend—pets included! Guests can enjoy entertainment, light refreshments, and a chance to personally thank Janet for her years of dedicated service.
