Located along the banks of the Mississippi river just up stream from St. Louis, Alton is perhaps best known as the hometown of legendary jazz musician Miles Davis.
Adding to its charm, Alton lies right along Historic US Route 66, according to HGTV.
Bird watching is a major attraction in Alton, with the town’s limestone bluffs serving as a popular spot for bald eagle spectating.
Each January and February Alton hosts the annual Audubon Eagle Ice Festival, featuring tons of eagle watching and family-friendly activities.
Alton is also among the most haunted towns in America, making it a perfect destination during fall time. According to local legend, the McPike Mansion houses nearly a dozen ghosts.
