Commuters in and around Chicago could be feeling some added pressure at the toll gate in 2027.
The Illinois Tollway is proposing its largest rate hike in history, and the first major increase in over a decade, as part of a $26.5 billion capital investment program.
Illinois Tollway launches Driving Connections program

The Driving Connections plan will bring infrastructure and road improvements to the Illinois Tollway over a 15-year period, according to the program site.
Funding for the operation includes a proposed 45-cent toll increase for passenger vehicles, and a 30% increase for commercial vehicles.
Both increases will take effect on January 1, 2027, according to the plan. Rates will further increase in line with inflation beginning in 2029.

If approved, the toll increases will mark the first rate hike for non-commercial vehicles since 2012.
“The Illinois Tollway is funded by tolls—not by state or federal taxes—and every dollar funds the Tollway’s system,” reads the Illinois Tollway site.
“Updating toll rates is necessary to fund the proposed Driving Connections capital program to continue to provide quality service, benefits and roadway maintenance for customers.”
