Illinois residents can feel relieved knowing they are one step closer to ensuring that the cosmetics on their bathroom shelves won’t pose long-term health risks.
This is thanks to a new House bill that prohibits the manufacture, delivery, and sale of cosmetic and personal-care products containing 11 specific harmful chemical ingredients, or forever chemicals, already banned in the European Union.

PFAS are a group of synthetic chemicals widely used in manufacturing that do not break down in the environment or the human body. Prolonged exposure to these substances has been linked to a range of serious health issues, including certain cancers, hormonal disruptions, and immune system damage.
Despite the consensus on these substances’ dangers, they have remained in a wide range of beauty products; this concern led to House Bill 3409, which Governor JB Pritzker signed into law on July 10.
The ban will take effect on July 1, 2028.
