Illinois could get a new state flag this year, thanks to a contest from the Secretary of State!
The Illinois Flag Commission has revealed 10 finalist designs and Illinoisans can vote on their favorite flag.
The finalists were selected from a pool of 5,000 entries, according to the flag commission, with each design adhering to certain submission guidelines.
According to reports, submissions were required to reflect the identity of Illinois, including the state’s history, natural features, and culture.
While state residents will have the opportunity to cast a vote, the General Assembly will get the final say on whether a new state flag is instated.
Illinois’ adopted its current banner which bears the state seal in 1915, according to the flag commission.
Some of the proposed designs pay tribute to the original flag, while others take a radical new approach. Click here to view the full list of finalists.
Public voting for the flag design is open now through February 14, before the flag commission presents their findings and recommendations to the General Assembly later in the year.
