If you’re receiving text messages that appear suspicious, they are likely scams. Recently, Illinois residents have reported receiving fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
In response, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias issued a severe warning for residents.
What the Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles Scam Says
These scam messages claim to come from the “Illinois State Department of Motor Vehicles” and state that an individual has an outstanding traffic ticket, threatening to suspend the vehicle registration and driving privileges of residents.
Giannoulias’ office has indicated these phishing texts aim to steal personal or financial data from Illinoisans. He advises the public to remain vigilant and cautious when receiving personal text messages.
The Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles only sends communications to remind individuals about their scheduled DMV appointments.
They do not send messages regarding their driver’s license or vehicle registration status. Report any fraudulent communication seen to the Federal Trade Commission here.
