A blistering heatwave has been enveloping Chicago for the better part of the week—and it seems like there is no end in sight.
As temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees during the Fourth of July weekend, motorists are advised to remain alert for pavement failures due to the extreme heat, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).
IDOT warns that pavement failures, including buckling and blowouts, can occur with little warning during prolonged periods of heat and humidity, leading to uneven driving surfaces.
IDOT deploys emergency crews for sudden highway blowouts
The Illinois Department of Transportation said:
While it’s impossible to predict where or when these failures might occur, maintenance personnel will be monitoring road conditions and on standby to make repairs as quickly as possible when they are observed and reported.
