There are plenty of incredible spots around Avondale, from the spooky coffee shop The Brewed to Cultura Ccafe serving up delicious Guatemalan inspired empanadas and Lake Effect Brewing, which moved into an old auto repair shop but one restaurant stands out as a tried and true classic, opening in 2013.
We all know and love Honey Butter Fried Chicken. The Avondale staple, located in one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world is turning 10 this year, so owners Christine Cikowski and Josh Kulp plan to celebrate with an official birthday party!
The event, dubbed Roscoe Rewind, is about to be the summer event with former retired chef Doug Sohn coming out of retirement to celebrate.
Cikowski and Kulp are the masterminds behind the Sunday Dinner Club which started in 2005 and is now on hiatus. Now the owners of Honey Butter Fried Chicken, the bustling Avondale shop stands today, known as one of the prime comfort food spots in the area.
Roscoe Street of the past once included the likes ofHot Doug’s, an ever-popular gourmet hot dog stand that closed back in 2014. While Chicago offers plenty of prime hotdog choices across the city, Hot Doug’s had an ever-loyal following and still does today.
The dynamic owners once looked to Doug Sohn’s as a quasi-mentor, eventually opening their shop nearby.
As for the 10th birthday menu, it’s not your standard birthday party eats, but stands out as classic Doug Sohn’s fare: expect classics like the Atomic Sausage (a raspberry, honey mustard, and smoked gouda creation) along with foie gras, sauternes duck sausage, and more topped with truffle aioli and foie gras mousse!
Honey Butter Fried Chicken will also serve french fries, fried with duck fat and duck cracklings in honor of Hot Doug’s classic menu item, along with Sunday Dinner Club staples burger and caramel corn.
Roscoe Rewind is a walk down memory lane and an epic celebration all in one! The birthday party, scheduled for June 14th, will only be open to 100 ticket holders.
If you’re looking for a Hot Doug’s fix after the party, head to Wrigley Field where fans can still enjoy a signature Sohn’s hotdog and beer in the stands.
Honey Butter Fried Chicken, which is also available at the United Center, plans to offer a series of specials in the lead-up to the shop’s 10th birthday on September 14.
