Each winter, the Illinois Railway Museum quietly turns into something straight out of a storybook. The Happy Holiday Railway, a festive train ride that’s equal parts nostalgia, magic, and charm. In Union, about an hour northwest of Chicago, it’s the kind of seasonal escape that you can’t risk skipping.
There, you can board a vintage railcar, dressed up in twinkling lights and holiday décor, for a cozy 40-minute ride through the wintry landscape. There’s hot chocolate to warm your hands, tasty treats, and cheerful music filling the car. For the kids, there’s even a surprise appearance from Santa himself. Those on the nice list even get a small gift.
But the magic doesn’t end when the train glides back into the station. On select days, historic Chicago streetcars run festive loops, and Mrs. Claus pops in for warm hellos and photo-ready moments.
Running throughout December, the Happy Holiday Railway tends to sell out quickly. With the free parking, family-friendly pricing, and that irresistible “step into a snow globe” atmosphere. It’s one of those outings that feels simple in the best way: joyful, cozy, and full of the kind of memories that stay forever.
