Gas prices in Illinois have hit their highest level in 4 years according to newly released data from AAA.

Illinois gas average hits $4.20

The U.S. gas average is just over $4 a gallon as of Tuesday, March 31, according to AAA, marking the highest national average since August of 2022.
The Illinois gas average currently sits at $4.20 a gallon, representing a $1.22 increase from just one month ago.
Prices in the Chicago metro region are even higher than the state average, reaching $4.41 in some areas.

When could prices level out

Predictions from the Energy Information Administration indicate gas prices have peaked and could stabilize for the remainder of 2026 and into 2027.
However, the data suggests U.S. gas prices will remain above $3 on average for the foreseeable future.
