According to a list compiled by World Atlas, Galena is considered one of the best small towns in Illinois for 2026. Nestled in the northwest corner of the state, the town is known for its rich history and regal charm.

First, we’ll begin with Galena’s main street, known as the “Helluva Half Mile” because it has over 125 independently owned businesses, shops, rustic restaurants, and wineries. You can stroll through streets lined with opulent mansions and cobblestones, reminiscent of scenes from history books.
However, what makes it truly remarkable is that Galena has preserved about 85% of its 19th-century structures, making its historic downtown one of the most well-preserved in Illinois.
Among the many attractions, some are particularly notable for their intriguing stories or sights.
One key attraction is the Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site, an Italianate brick house that the citizens of Galena gifted to Ulysses S. Grant in 1865 after his return from the Civil War. The house still contains nearly all of its original furnishings, and tours, offered from Wednesday to Sunday, guide visitors through the parlors and bedrooms as they appeared during Grant’s 1868 presidential campaign.
Inside the oldest continuously running hotel in Illinois
The DeSoto House Hotel, which has been in operation since 1855, claims to be the oldest continuously running hotel in Illinois. Abraham Lincoln famously spoke from its second-floor balcony in 1856, and Grant ran his presidential campaign from two of the hotel’s rooms.
For those who crave the outdoors, we recommend heading to the Galena River Trail, which begins just south of downtown. It follows an 8.8-mile path along a former Illinois Central right-of-way, leading to the Mississippi backwaters at Galena Junction, all on crushed limestone.
