Frida Kahlo: Timeless is the largest exhibition of Frida Kahlo’s work to come to the Chicago area in over 40 years and it is not to be missed.
When it comes to the most important and influential painters in history Frida Kahlo will always be one of the first names that come to mind. Today paintings by Mexico’s national treasure sell for millions and have inspired movements globally. Her uncompromising self-portraits and kaleidoscopic use of color combined with her arresting self-assessment and candid themes were way ahead of her time, as were her political views. Views that years later influenced the feminist movement of the 1970s and more.
In many ways, however, without an insight into her character, her mentality, and her significant experiences, a viewer is only scratching the surface. Images of Frida Kahlo’s most iconic creations can be found online, but simply viewing them through a screen has never been more than a shrouded, one-dimensional glimpse at her world. Luckily for residents of Chicagoland, a mesmerizing new exhibition of the Mexican painter’s life has now taken over the Cleve Carney Museum of Art in Glen Ellyn.
Running through summer until September 6, 2021, Frida Kahlo: Timeless offers a presentation of the life and works of Frida Kahlo. Featuring 26 original pieces within an expansive and immersive historical exhibit, it is the largest exhibition of Frida Kahlo’s work to come to the Chicago area in over 40 years.
In addition to 26 original works, there are replicas of objects from her life, an informative multimedia gallery, and much more. With these visitors are given the chance to submerge themselves in Frida Kahlo’s world, and grasp an understanding of the framework of her life and the events that led her to become one of the most important painters of all time.
Kahlo’s tumultuous life and her refusal to allow illness to restrict her diverse and intense passions motivated a drive to “paint her reality” and this exhibition provides intimate access into her world, her psyche, and what shaped her. The immersive exhibition features more than 100 photographic images from the artist’s life and countless Instagrammable moments.
A family-friendly children’s area makes it an ideal family day out whilst a Frida Kahlo-inspired garden designed by Ball Horticultural offers respite from the city clamor and a great spot to snap some photos.
Located at 425 Fawell Boulevard in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, 60137 Frida Kahlo: Timeless 10 am to 6 pm every day of the week and until 9 pm on Thursdays.
