Artist, Frankie Zela, is spreading cheer throughout Chicago with a series of beautiful home-made murals!
It’s not so easy finding the bright side of things right now. Yet, even when things are looking grim, there are those dime-a-dozen human beings that go out of their way to add a splash of color to the lives of others.
Throughout the pandemic, we’ve seen wonderful instances of Chicagoans doing their part to brighten the community. Recently, a local collective began setting stocked-and-vibrant “Love Fridges” across the city for those in need. Before that, there were the artists who transformed an abandoned building into a free grocery store.
To bring a little sunshine to her own community, Jefferson Park artist, Frankie Zela has begun creating a florescent series of beautiful murals on homes across the North Side.
Zela, is a general manager at O’ Donovan’s Pub & Restaurant, began her floral endeavor after customers took to her floral paintings on display in the bar. Back in 2015, Zela began painting vivid portraits of flowers on old windows that she’d collect. With the recent events, Zela has had more time on her hands to paint, growing her gallery in the pub.
While her art often sold from O’ Donovan’s, soon customers were requesting more of a home touch. Word-of-mouth, as well as grateful friends/customers of Zela, lead to her growing her business to murals, which began decorating fences, doors, and garages across the community.
Since then, Zela started a Facebook for her work, where she is now accepting requests for home murals. Zela’s oevre consists of bright, colorful sunflowers and daisies. Prices vary depending on the canvas, but the going rate for a 7-foot garage door starts at $300.
