Did you notice your house shake slightly last night?
It wasn’t just your imagination—a 3.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in downstate Illinois overnight!
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the small quake at 1:27 a.m. Tuesday near Ohlman Illinois, 90 miles northeast of St. Louis.
Earthquake felt across southern Illinois

Data from the USGS shows the quake was felt in surrounding cities including Springfield, Decatur, Urbana-Champagne, and Peoria.
According to the USGS, the quake occurred within the Illinois Basin-Ozark Dome region, an active geological area covering parts of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and Arkansas.
Seismic activity is not uncommon in this region, with moderate-intensity quakes occurring once every 10-20 years, and low-intensity quakes happening once or twice a year.
