Exciting news for bird watchers: An eaglet has officially hatched in Chicago, making it the first time in more than a century.
According to NBC Chicago, the eagle hatched in a nest on April 28 at Park 597 in Chicago. While there have been previous records of eagles nesting and attempts at raising chicks in Chicago, none have been successful until the birth of this eaglet.
The news outlet also mentioned that volunteers with the Park District and birdwatchers are closely monitoring the eagles, where nesting activity was first observed in February and has been tracked ever since.
“For your safety and that of the wildlife, we ask that you keep a safe distance and remain on marked trails if you are in the area,” the Chicago Park District stated.
Adding to the excitement, the Chicago Park District has launched a “Name the Eagle” contest. Chicagoans can submit three name suggestions for the charming eaglet by May 15 via this form.
After this submission period ends, a panel of local birding groups and members of the Park District’s Natural Resources team will review the entries and select three finalist names. Residents will then have the opportunity to vote on these names, ultimately deciding what this little eagle will be called.
The finalist names will be revealed on May 19, and voting will be open from that day until June 1.
