If you’ve been scrolling through Instagram, TikTok, X, or basically any social media platform, you’ve likely come across the Internet’s newest viral animal obsession—the bald eagle family.
While it’s bittersweet to share that one of the three eaglets did not survive, these magnificent birds have captured our hearts and renewed our interest in nature watching.
However, your options for bald eagle watching extend beyond just your phone screen. In fact, you can actually witness them in person right here in Chicago and across Illinois. Bald eagles are common migratory birds and winter residents in Illinois, although sightings are rare in the summer. Fortunately for Chicago residents, the bald eagle population has made a comeback in the area, with 35 nests identified since 2021.
