Dr. Murphy’s Food Hall is opening on August 3 at the historic Cook County Hospital Building.

Rejoice, fellow foodies! A new food hall is opening in Chicago soon and it’ll feature 12 brand new food stalls offering a variety of options, all the way from tacos and tamales to all-day breakfast food. The first of its kind in the Illinois Medical District, Dr. Murphy’s Food Hall will be making its debut on Monday, August 3, at the landmarked Old Cook County Hospital. The Food Hall is part of the larger $1 billion renovation project for the historic building.

Named for John B. Murphy, a leading surgeon who worked and taught in the former hospital during the late 19th century, the food hall features a 10,000-square-foot space with a wide range of culinary options, as well as an outdoor patio and bar area. Of course, the food hall has been designed to ensure social distancing. ” Dr. Murphy is 10,500 square feet, and we’re actually able to create floor plans, with modular seating, so that people are comfortable and can feel safe,” said the leading operator, award-winning chef Akhtar Nawab to the Chicago Tribune.

“You can order in queue, managing social distancing, with plexiglass dividers to manage the transaction safely,” he continued. “Or you can order ahead through the website, and pick up at the concierge area. We also will have curbside pickup and delivery. So we’ve created a few ways for people to safely get what they want.”

All dining options have been curated by Nawab, who owns the renowned Mexican restaurant, Alta Calidad, in NYC. All vendors feature a wide range of culinary options and are mostly women and minority-owned businesses while some of them are also first-time operators. Among the stalls, you’ll find well-known local vendors such as Logan Square’s Passion House Coffee, vendors who are new to Chicago such as Maharani Indian Cuisine, a modern Indian concept which first opened in Omaha, NB, back in 2019, and completely new concepts such as Doc’s Bar and  Brekkie & Bake Shop,  a new restaurant by chef Taylor Bischof selling all-day breakfast food.  You can check out the full list of vendors below:
