If you plan to use public transportation this New Year’s Eve, we have some important information for you!
On New Year’s Eve, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will operate on a regular schedule, with extended hours on specific lines. On New Year’s Day, service will be modified and reduced.

CTA New Year’s Eve Schedule 2025
- Free rides: CTA will be offering this New Year’s Eve, and the free rides will be available on both CTA trains and buses from 10 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, until 4 a.m. Thursday, January 1.
- The Red Line and the Blue Line will operate 24 hours a day on New Year’s Eve.
- The Purple Line: service hours will be extended until 2 a.m.
- The Yellow Line: service hours will be extended until 2 a.m.
CTA New Year’s Day Schedule 2026
- General: Expect a Sunday or holiday schedule with fewer trains and buses, especially in the evening.
- 24/7 Service: The Red Line (Howard-Jackson Park) and the Blue Line (Forest Park-O’Hare) operate 24 hours a day, even on holidays.
- Other Lines (Orange, Green, etc.): Expect reduced frequency; some may stop running overnight or have minimal daytime service.
- Buses: Many bus routes will operate on a Sunday schedule or have significant reductions.
