The holidays are winding down, and for many of us that means leftover Christmas trees and lots of trash to get rid of.
Chicagoans can reduce their carbon footprint by sustainably disposing of their Christmas trees with the help of the city’s annual tree recycling program!
In partnership with the Chicago Park District, the Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) will collect Christmas trees at dozens of locations across the city, from January 11-25.
The Chicago Christmas tree recycling program helps convert thousands of decaying trees into mulch which is then split between city residents, local parks, and forests.
The program accepts only live and natural Christmas trees. All trees must be free of ornaments, lights, tinsel, and other fixtures upon drop-off.
For residents seeking to get a head start on their spring landscaping projects, the DSS will be handing out free mulch at select drop-off locations beginning January 13.
