Chiya Chai, a restaurant and cafe known for its 18 varieties of South Asian chai sourced from a family farm in Nepal, officially closed its Logan Square location on Sunday, much to the dismay of loyal customers.
According to Block Club Chicago, co-owner Rajee Aryal stated that they no longer have the capacity to maintain the large storefront, which has been losing money in recent years due to rising rent and increasing costs for labor, food, and supplies.
Chiya Chai has officially closed its Logan Square location
The owners decided in April not to renew their lease, which ends in June. The short notice for the closure was due to a difficult decision, and the team has been busy with their other locations.
While the closure of Chiya Chai in Logan Square is unfortunate, it will be reopening at a new location—possibly later this year. The owners are looking to reopen in Avondale, Albany Park, or Humboldt Park.
If you’re craving Chiya Chai, you can still visit their other locations along the Riverwalk at 66 E. Wacker Drive and in the Loop at 79 E. Madison St. Additionally, Chiya Chai has a booth at the annual winter Christkindlmarket Downtown.
