The inaugural Chicago River Swim took the city by storm in 2025, bringing hundreds of daring swimmers to the Chicago River for the ultimate fundraising feat.
Now, the aquatic event is back by popular demand in 2026.
Here’s all the details, and how you can register to take the plunge!
River Swim back this September

The Chicago River Swim will take off from the Riverwalk on Sunday, September 20.
500 swimmers will embark on one-mile and two-mile courses along the central downtown river channel.
Spectators will be able to gather along the Riverwalk to cheer on the participants as they swim between Wolf Point and State Street.
Proceeds from the charitable open water event will support ALS research, as well as youth swim education programs throughout the city.
How to apply

Chicagoans interested in taking the plunge themself can apply to join the River Swim beginning this month.
Applications open on Tuesday, March 31, at 10 a.m. and close Monday, April 27.
Eligible applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be 18 years of age or older on event day.
- Show proof of participation in a previous professionally organized, 1-2 miles open-water swim event from the past 36 months
