With Chicago’s thriving gastronomy scene offering up everything from revered sushi restaurants to authentic taquerias, it is no surprise that some Chicago establishments often garner attention on a national scale.
Occasionally we’ll even feature in global rankings, be it a Chicago pizzeria ranking among the best pizzerias in the world or a Chicago diner recognized as the home of one of the best burgers in the world.
Now one of Chicago’s restaurant has been named in a competitive list of the best restaurants on the entire planet.
Having recently been awarded a third Michelin-star in November of 2023, Smyth, from Chefs John Shields and Karen Urie Shields, was the restaurant named in this year’s The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2024 list (in the 51-100 section).
While missing out on the top 50, the West Loop spot was one of only three U.S.-based restaurants featured in the 51-100 list coming in as a new entry at #90.
“For chef John Shields and his pastry chef and partner Karen, Smyth is a distillation of two decades of experience at the forefront of the Chicago dining scene,” reads the World’s 50 Best eulogy.
“Today, the duo meld modern techniques with ancient ones, with many dishes cooked or finished over an open-fire grill. Nearly all of Smyth’s produce comes from just 20 miles away, on a plot of land simply called The Farm, where they grow more than 200 varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs.”
Smyth is one of two Michelin-starred restaurants in Chicago to be awarded three Michelin stars, the guidebook’s highest and most coveted recognition, and one of just thirteen places in the United States.
“It’s a distinct honor to be included on this prestigious list,” said Smyth’s Chef John Shields. “I’ve made it my life’s work to create transcendent culinary experiences that guests will never forget. We have the best team in the world here at Smyth and I’m proud to share this recognition with them.”
