Four CTA Red Line stations on the Far North Side will officially reopen for service on Sunday, July 20, after years of construction tied to the $2.1 billion Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) project, according to a CTA release.
The largest CTA reconstruction project to date
The nearly century-old stations have been completely rebuilt as part of the transit system’s largest renovation effort to date.
Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn, and Bryn Mawr stations have undergone full reconstructions, including widened platforms, new overhead canopies, and improved accessibility features like elevators and escalators.

In addition to the station upgrades, the tracks along the north branch have been replaced to support a new signal system designed to make commutes smoother and quieter.
Johnson praises RPM improvements
“With the RPM improvements, the Red Line on the North Side is more accessible to all Chicagoans, providing residents and working families with convenient and reliable transit that connects people across our great City,” said Mayor Johnson.
“The Red Line is the backbone of our City and is critical to our economic vibrancy, which is why I am proud to support investments like RPM and the future Red Line Extension Project on the Far South Side.”
