Chicago might be known for its Italian beef sandwiches and signature hot dogs, but the Windy City is quickly becoming the nation’s capital for a different kind of cuisine.
A recent survey from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has named Chicago the most vegan-friendly city in the U.S. for 2025.
How Chicago is pioneering plant-based cooking
Chicago snagged the top spot on the list due to our ever-growing selection of vegan and vegetarian eateries.
PETA recognized a number of Chicago restaurants pushing the boundaries of plant-focused food, including fully vegetarian popular spots like Kale My Name and The Chicago Diner.
Additionally, PETA recognized other local restaurants for expanding their menus to include animal product-free options, like Buono’s beef-less Italian beef sandwich and Alliance Bakery’s all-vegan cakes.
As for other must-try vegan restaurants, PETA shouted out the following spots:
- Alice and Friends Vegan Kitchen
- Kitchen 17
- Native Foods
- Penelope’s Vegan Taqueria
- Runaway Cow
- Soul City Veg
Whether you’re already living the plant-based life, thinking of making the jump, or just looking to try something new, these local vegan eateries are sure to please the palate.
