Fourth of July Weekend in Chicago is just about here—and if predictions from the National Weather Service (NWS) are any indication, it’s going to be a period of volatile weather in the Windy City!
Chicago will see back-to-back chances for thunderstorms and extreme heat indexes for much of the weekend.
Here’s a breakdown of the forecast.
Heatwave to continue, storms beginning Friday
A sweltering heatwave has gripped Chicago for much of the week—and unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight.
Thursday’s high will reach 96 degrees with a staggering heat index of 101, according to the NWS.
Starting Friday, a prolonged stretch of soggy weather and intense thunderstorms will descend upon the Chicago region.
Showers are likely Friday during the day, with a high of 90 degrees and a heat index of 96 degrees. Rainy conditions could last into the overnight hours.
For the Fourth of July on Saturday, Chicagoans could see their barbecue plans dashed, as additional thunderstorms are possible over the course of the day.
The NWS predicts a 60% chance of precipitation Saturday, and a high of 84 degrees.
Sunday will bring partly sunny conditions with a slight chance of storms in the afternoon and a high of 84 degrees.
All in all, Independence Day Weekend in Chicago will feel very seasonal—that is, hot and unpredictable.
So be sure to head to the lakefront prepared, and have a backup plan in the event of a summer shower!
