If you can’t resist scrolling through TikTok (like us), you’ve probably encountered numerous viral food trends. One night, you might see someone enjoying a sprinkle-topped cake cup, and by morning, that video has gone viral, and everyone and their mother has suddenly tried these cakes.
Yes, we’re talking about the internet’s most-obsessed dessert: Dotcups.
The viral New York bakery: The Dotcakes
The trend started at The Dotcakes bakery in Roslyn, New York, where people waited in line for hours to get their hands on one.
So why the frenzy? Each 8-ounce Dotcup is basically a grown-up riff on boxed Funfetti cake: soft sponge cake in classic white, chocolate, vanilla chip, or red velvet, topped with vanilla buttercream or cream cheese frosting, then fully coated in a layer of crunchy rainbow nonpareils.
Unless you lived near The Dotcakes or Butterfield Market, an upscale NYC grocery that carried them, getting one was basically impossible. That is, until now: Dotcakes’ mini Dotcups are now available at select Costco warehouses across Chicago. So, you can finally decide for yourself whether they live up to the hype.
Heads up: if you’re hoping to buy just one, you’ll have to settle for a pack. Costco sells Dotcups only in a 6-pack with 3 chocolate and 3 vanilla mini cakes. At the time of publication, prices range from $14.79 to $14.99, depending on the location.
How to find The Dotcakes before they sell out
Before you head to your nearest Costco, it’s a good idea to check the availability. You can do this in one of two ways:
- Use the Costco App: Open the app and use the warehouse search bar to look up “Dotcakes” or Item #2096781.
- Call Costco: Dial the local warehouse directly, press the extension for administrative staff or the inventory department, and ask whether Item #2096781 is in stock.
