A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect in Chicago for the second consecutive day, as frigid air sends temperatures plunging into the negatives across the region.
Temperatures hovered around -7 degrees Tuesday morning, with a high of just 1 degree predicted this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Wind chills as low as -27 degrees are making conditions even more dangerous.
The NWS has extended the Cold Weather Advisory until 12 am Wednesday.
Hundreds of area schools are closed due to the extreme cold, and the city has activated its warming centers through Friday.
Temperatures will rise Wednesday but remain below freezing for a high of 25 degrees. A 30% chance of snow is possible in the afternoon with further snowfall likely into the evening hours.

Sub-freezing conditions will last for much of the week, only climbing slightly above the freezing mark on Saturday for a high of 34 degrees.
While Chicagoans are no strangers to winter’s chill, the extreme cold can present a number of dangers to health and safety.
The city of Chicago advises residents to avoid unnecessary trips outdoors while the extreme weather persists.
If leaving the home, make sure to layer up with multiple articles of warm, loose-fitting clothing, and be sure to cover your head, hands, and feet.
