Forgot to leave your weed at home? Chicago’s airports have you covered.
Following the recent legalization of recreational cannabis in IL, both O’Hare International Airport and Midway Airport have installed “Cannabis Amnesty Boxes” where travelers can dump their pot before getting on the plane.
It’s still illegal to fly with cannabis, even though many states have legalized recreational use. This is because the drug is still federally illegal and US airspace is regulated by the federal government, which makes these boxes a convenient way for travelers to get rid of any pot they might have forgotten (or “forgotten”) they were carrying.

The boxes are located just outside TSA checkpoints for easy disposal and travelers are encouraged to drop off their stash before entering the security line. Since it’s not illegal to possess cannabis in IL airports, Chicagoans don’t have to worry about the police targeting those tossing their pot. Be smart. Don’t try to fly with cannabis (at least until/if it’s legalized nationwide.)
