The Brookfield Zoo just welcomed a new resident opossum—and staff need your help naming the cuddly critter!
Here’s everything to know about the zoo’s newest friend and where to cast your vote for the best opossum name.
Help Brookfield Zoo name an opossum
The Brookfield Zoo recently rescued a Virginia Opossum, a native opossum species commonly found around Chicago.
The opossum reportedly suffered several injuries, including a missing ear and several toes, according to the zoo. These injuries would make it unsafe for him to return to life in the wild.
Right now the opossum is behind the scenes getting some much needed care and cuddles, before beginning his new life as an Animal Ambassador for the zoo.
Before that can happen, the little guy needs a name—and the zoo is accepting votes for several monikers, each with a unique meaning:
- Crouton – “reflection of his small size and big personality.”
- Fig – “inspired by one of nature’s small but mighty fruits.”
- Garbanzo – “a fitting choice for his adorable bean-shaped eyes.”
- Vincent – “a tribute to famed painter Vincent Van Gogh and a nod to the opossum’s distinctive ear, which was injured prior to his rescue.”
