The Brookfield Zoo recently welcomed a pair of new residents—and they’re among the rarest big cats in the world.
Two Amur leopard cubs were born at the zoo on July 14, 2025 to leopard parents Mina and Sasha. The birth represents a major conservation milestone for the species which has an estimated population of only 100 animals in the wild.
Here’s everything to know about the Amur leopard and when you can visit the babies for yourself!
All about the Amur leopard

Amur leopards are native to forested regions of eastern Russia, with thick coats designed to insulate them from extreme cold—making them feel right at home in “Chi-beria.”
The big cats are highly endangered due to habitat loss, forest fires, and poaching, making the recent birth at the Brookfield Zoo all the more important.
“This birth is a hopeful step for the future of Amur leopards,” said Brookfield Zoo representative Mark Wanner. “…Each birth represents a critical opportunity to help ensure this extraordinary animal doesn’t disappear forever.”
Preparing for the cubs’ zoo debut

Since arriving at Brookfield about three months ago, the cubs have been steadily growing and bonding with mom Mina.
A recent checkup confirmed the pair are female, and Brookfield Zoo staff have stated the kittens are adjusting well to their new home.
The cubs are still preparing for their zoo debut and guests can expect to visit them in the near future. For now, leopard lovers can say hi to papa leopard Sasha at the zoo’s Desert’s Edge habitat.
