If you were thinking of kicking off Lolla weekend in Chicago with a dip in the lake, you’ll want to reconsider—the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Beach Hazard Statement for the lakefront effective until 4 p.m. Friday.
High waves and strong currents possible
High waves and dangerous currents will occur at Lake Michigan beaches in Central and Northern Cook County Friday afternoon, according to the statement.
The NWS describes swimming conditions as “life threatening” particularly for inexperienced swimmers.

The Beach Hazard Statement coincides with an Air Quality Alert in Chicago until midnight tonight due to Canadian wildfire smoke.
Safety precautions
The NWS advises the public to stay out of the water, and avoid jetties, breakwalls, and other lakefront structures.
