As spring gradually shifts to summer, we begin to recall all the places along the Chicago River that uplift us after a long workday. From patios painted in ivy to rooftops with twinkling skyline views, we know there are abundant restaurants to choose from.
If you’re looking for a want a spot conveniently located in River North with a particular standout menu—table-side guacamole—Barrio is the place to go.
The restaurant stands out if you’re looking for thumping music and an upbeat atmosphere. The design blends rustic elements with a touch of refinement and edginess. Its industrial-chic layout includes a large circular bar, modern artwork, and dim lighting. When the weather permits, long tables are situated outside and adorned with suspended lights and baskets of perennial plants.
The dishes everyone regrets not ordering
When it comes to the men, Barrio offers a creative take on traditional Mexican fare, and the menu has a bit of everything—focusing on shared plates using locally sourced ingredients.
We recommend ordering a platter of Short Rib Quesabirria, which is served with Oaxaca and chihuahua cheese consommé. For something more filling, you can enjoy the nachos, which are topped with aged jack cheese, pickled red onion, black beans, jalapeños, charred tomato and jalapeño salsa, pico de gallo, and garlic crema.
Additionally, try the Carne Asada: an 8 oz NY Strip accompanied by roasted vegetables, rice, refried beans, chimichurri, and charred tomato salsa. And, of course, the table-side guacamole, which is fresh and zesty.
They have a refreshing selection of cocktails, and the margaritas will have you ordering more than one. The Jalapeño Cucumber features Hornitos, elderflower liqueur, lime, and sage. The Classico is made with Jose Cuervo Tradicional plata, triple sec, agave nectar, lime, and Himalayan lime sea salt. There’s also the Lavender Hibiscus, which includes olmeca altos plata, lavender, and hibiscus. It’s worth mentioning the happy hour, where every Monday is Margarita Monday, where all Margaritas are just $10.
