Best known for their gooey cinnamon rolls, Ann Sather Restaurant and Catering is a favorite breakfast spot on the north side of Chicago. Their warm cinnamon rolls and equally sweet hospitality are what set Ann Sather apart from other diners in Chicago. [Feature photo: @alextcopeland]
In 1945, Ann Sather (yes, she was a real person!) opened what would eventually become one of Chicago’s most popular diners in Lakeview. For over 35 years, she ran the restaurant by herself before bringing on Tom Tunney who now runs the business. While Ann Sather herself died in 1996, her “good food, good friends and good conversation” philosophy continues to this day in three locations on Chicago’s north side.
Ann Sather has a delicious menu of breakfast and lunch entrees, most of which come with the option of a side of their famous cinnamon rolls. The cinnamon rolls have a thick top of powdered sugar icing and a gooey, irresistible center. Lucky for patrons, Ann Sather sells their delicious pastries to-go in half-dozen and dozen batches.
Other popular breakfast menu options include soft, Swedish style pancakes with lingonberries, homemade french toast, and a variety of eggs benedict dishes. For lunch, Ann Sather offers a build-your-own burger, open-face sandwiches, hearty vegetarian chili, and more delectable options. They also have all the fixings for mimosas and bloody marys provided you bring your own booze. Ann Sather is a particularly popular brunch spot, especially on Sundays. They also don’t take reservations, so be sure to show up early or expect a wait.
