In the 1940s, a woman named Ann Sather decided that what she really wanted to do was own and run a restaurant.
So, when the Swedish owners of a restaurant in Chicago decided to retire, Ann invested her life savings to buy the diner, which she named Ann Sather’s. She later sold the diner to Tom Tunney, who has been running it ever since.
The devotion to made-from-scratch food, particularly the cinnamon rolls, which Jeff Mauro describes as “insane,” has made the restaurant legendary in the Lakeview neighborhood. Recently, there has been a lot of news surrounding this beloved breakfast spot.
Sadly, the building that housed the original Ann Sather restaurant on Belmont Avenue was demolished earlier this year, forcing the restaurant to open a new location in Wicker Park at 1819 W. Division St.

However, that’s not the main topic of discussion. Stella’s Diner abruptly closed last month, and it seems there will be a new restaurant taking its place—Ann Sather’s! Tom Tunney has signed a lease to open at 3042 N. Broadway at Barry Avenue this fall. This new location will mean the closure of another existing one.
The new Ann Sather’s will replace a location that has been in operation for 30 years, approximately half a mile north at 3415 N. Broadway, near Roscoe Street. That location is set to close shortly before the new location at the former Stella’s site opens.
