This past summer, IMAX was top of mind thanks to Christopher Nolan’s release of “The Odyssey,” the first major feature film shot entirely on IMAX cameras.
Many Chicagoans were surprised to learn that, contrary to popular belief, only two IMAX locations exist in the city: AMC River East 21 and Regal City North.
However, there is good news on the horizon; plans are in progress to add IMAX capabilities to a popular movie theater in downtown Chicago.

AMC River East 21 in Streeterville is upgrading to IMAX
According to NBC Chicago, a building permit record revealed that one of the auditoriums at AMC River East 21, located at 322 E. Illinois St. in Streeterville, will be converted to include IMAX technology.
Although the exact timeline for the project is unclear, we hope it’s completed before the release of “Dune: Part Three”—otherwise, we might be stuck with the 7 a.m. or 3 a.m. showtimes like “The Odyssey.”
